Colour theory test

Hi all, hope you had lovely weekends. While I was at the Bauhaus exhibition I remembered something we had learnt at college - Kandinsky's colour theory test. He wanted there to be some kind of universal aesthetic for colour and shape so he asked all the Bauhaus students -

Take a triangle, circle and a square, and apply one of the primary colours to each of them.
Which shape is blue? Which is red? And which is yellow?

Most people come up with the same answer. What's your answer, and why? I realised my reason for the square as based on something funny from childhood. I'll tell you in the comments!

Kandinsky taught what was basically the art foundation course at the Bauhaus. Can you imagine Kandinsky being your first art teacher? Bonkers!

  1. I went for Red Square, Yellow Circle, Blue Triangle, but I kept wanting to swap the red/blue shape choice!

  2. Blue square, red circle, yellow triangle .... blue & square = solidness, red & circle = polka dots!, yellow & triangle ... i think a traffic sign reference (in aus) ... come to think maybe that's why the circle is red...or maybe i just drive tooo much!! interesting tho. I love this stuff! Hx

  4. oh, meant to say because yellow is more relaxed, round blue is formal, square and red is spiky contrasting! Perfectly logical. I'm feeling like I'm in the minority though...

  6. i chose yellow triangle, coz it's pointy, and yellow's pointy (slight synesthesia moment!)

red square coz of mr strong http://www.themistermen.co.uk/mr_men/mr_strong.html

blue just seemed right for the circle. natural, a drop of water.

that's what most people say apparently. apart from the bit about mr strong ;-)

  8. Ha ha, exactly why I chose red square! Blue circle because, um, don't know - just felt right. Yellow triangle, again just because it looks nice.

  11. I chose yellow triangle, blue square and red circle. Not sure why! Is that the colours from 'I am a shape' - mr maker? ... or maybe the square is red on there too!

  15. Do you think the order in which the question is posed affects the outcome? It seems to me you'd be more likely to line up the first colour with the first shape, and so on. I was in such a rush to find out what the answers were that I can't remember what my initial thoughts were. Kellie xx
